Jocelyn and I grew up with a fig tree in our backyard. The feeling of a freshly picked fig is still clear in my mind: the sap from the stem, the sweet flavor punctuated by a hundred seeds, the almost nonexistent smell. Our mother, the painter, loves figs but I never could get excited about this fruit. That is of course, until I drenched it in whiskey.
