Last week I drove past a Dunkin Donuts in Santa Monica and wouldn't have thought twice about it if there wasn't a row of tents lined up outside. At first I assumed it was a homeless encampment that had sprung up in an enviable location. Then I saw twenty-somethings with high ponytails on cell-phones texting, tweeting, and snap-chatting away about the giant grand opening sign I was just noticing hanging above their heads. Turns out that this is the first Dunkin Donuts to be back in the state of California in a very long time. And people here are serious about their donuts. It may seem trite to be celebrating National Cream Filled Donut Day in a city (Los Angeles) with 30,000 homeless people, many of whom are living in tents. But in a perfect world, there would be no homeless, no serious drought, no war, and donuts for everyone.
